Discover tea

Whatever the kind, white, green, yellow, oolong or black, all tea comes from the same plant – Camillia Sinensis.

The way the plucked leaves are processed changes the tea’s character, chemical composition and appearance.

A couple of exceptions that you may have heard of are Rooibos and Maté. Rooibos tea, also known as Redbush, is packed with health benefits and is naturally caffeine-free. Maté originates in South America and is rich in caffeine with a long history as an energy-boosting drink.

Typical origin profiles

If you enjoy a good cup of coffee but don't know much about why, single origin coffees are a great way to explore more of what the world of coffee has to offer.

Understanding some of the generalised tastes of different coffee growing regions will help make selecting the right coffee to your personal taste much simpler.

1. Cost Rica & El Salvador
Most Central American coffees have a ‘traditional coffee’ taste, with hints of chocolate, low acidity and sometimes a nuttiness too. Look out for super sweetness in our Costa Rica bean and for Swiss milk chocolate notes in our El Salvador.

2. Colombia, Brazil & Peru
With a low acidity, these regions are great for all-day drinking. They are often found as component parts of many coffee blends. However the best of them, like our Single Origins, absolutely stand up in their own right and are a great place to begin if you’re new to exploring Single Origins.

3. Ethiopia, Kenya & Rwanda
Ethiopia is known as the birthplace of coffee, and everyone should try a high-quality roast from there. These coffees are bright, and often winey, light and fruity like red berries. Unlike deep, dark coffees, a light or medium roast coffee from these regions will have a very clean tea-like quality when brewed in certain methods.

4. Indonesia & Papua New Guinea
Such great coffees from these mountainous countries! Most Indonesian coffees from Sumatra and Java produce earthy, spicy and syrupy tastes. Our Sumatran is our go-to coffee when we enter coffee roasting competitions. Further east, Papua New Guinea’s smallholder coffees can be wildly fruity.

5. Caribbean
Most Caribbean Arabica coffees are grown in shade at high altitudes in tropical mountain areas. As a result, these coffees are considered premium quality. They usually have a rich, full bodied flavour with a vibrant acidity.
